For the last three years I have donated my time to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society's annual calendar. When someone sponsors a calendar page they get a professional photo taken of their pet. On this particular night I was going to see Kristyn and her senior great dane mix Zoe whom they had adopted from the Humane Society when she was 8 weeks old. Typically these sessions are quick. I get a couple of great shots for the calendar page for their 15 min of fame and then go home. However, as I started taking portraits, Kristyn told me that they were taking Zoe to the vet tomorrow to see if she was in pain and how long she would have left. It changed everything about the scope of the session. Since this would be the last images of the two of them I wanted them to both tribute Zoe and her personality, but also the strong bond they had formed over the last 12-13 years. Zoe made it one more week until she had her “final” vet visit and crossed the rainbow bridge. These are some of the most important images I have ever taken.
