My Furry Valentine

In preparation for my Valentine Sessions event on Saturday February 15th from noon - 4PM, we headed out last Saturday and grabbed a few photos of Alice (a.k.a. my muse /my pride & joy / the stinker...) and these awesome balloons from Airheads Balloon Art. Even though she was a little bit of a diva (read: brat) before we got started, I love how these turned out. There are still a few slots remaining if you'd like to get photos of your furry valentine. Holiday Pet Photos

In preparation for the month long promotion for Jenny Karlsson Photography that is currently held at Petagogy, I needed photos to create a cute promo card. I contacted my friend Abbie who has two Boston Terriers, and asked her if I could borrow them for a special project :). We met up on a September morning in Mellon Park, and I couldn't have asked for better models. I love the variety of shots that you can get in that park, and I drove home after the shoot feeling energized and happy for being able to do what I love. To create the cards I collaborated with Heather Winkel, the wonderful designer of Quite Like It Design. I basically gave her complete freedom to pick among my photos and come up with a holiday theme. I couldn't be happier with how they came out, and I feel that they are very "me".

Since it is Friday, I thought I'd share some of the designs that we were working on. If you are getting married, Quite Like It Design does an amazing job with creating custom wedding invitations and maps.

Have a great weekend everyone. I hope these holiday cards makes you laugh! :)

Holiday Promotion at Petagogy

I’m really excited to announce that I’ve teamed up with Petagogy for a month long holiday promotion. If you haven’t visited their store yet, you’re missing out! This store has an incredible collection of healthy pet foods, and unique toys, and their owners Cole, Heather, Ben and Elsie are very knowledgeable and passionate about pets health. You can check out Petagogy's Facebook page, website, or blog to stay up to date about their products and fun events. Also, read the blog post that I wrote about them when they opened the store on Ellsworth Ave in Shadyside earlier this year. When purchasing a product in the store during November (1-30th), you'll receive a card with a $50 print credit to use for your pet's holiday pictures. The offer expires December 31st, but sessions can be scheduled for 2012. I received the promotion cards in the mail last night and they are fantastic! Here's a preview of one of the designs that Heather Winkel of Quite Like It Design created from one of my sessions this fall. Head over to Petagogy and grab your coupon with any purchase!

Enzo & Co. | Pittsburgh Dog Photography

Alison, Rhett, and their three dogs Enzo, Meeka, and Abby met up with me in Mellon Park on an early sunny morning in July. Enzo is going to be featured in the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society 2012 Calendar, but Meeka and Abby also got their portraits taken. I feel so fortunate that I got to meet such wonderful people like Alison and Rhett, and to photograph their furry family.

Rhett got Enzo when he was 16 years old as a freshman in high school. Enzo was born to a family friend's dog named Cinnamon - Rhett picked him because he was the biggest puppy in the litter. Enzo has turned out to be a big boy - a heavy 85 lbs. He has an obsession with food and has been known to ruin New Year’s parties by eating parts off all the cakes when no one is looking. Despite his eating obsession is a very laid back and easy going. He currently lives with Rhett's parents, but often comes to visit Alison and Rhett on the weekends in Squirrel Hill where he has developed a taste for Alison's pointy shoes. Enzo just celebrated his 15th birthday in April. He goes by the nickname Red Man.

Alison wanted to get a small dog that could travel easily as she was working in Germany and traveling often. Alison got Meeka when she was 2 years old from a breeder in Illinois. Her official name is Del Amos Sweet Meeka and she was born to a European Champion. Meeka was going to be a show dog, but a bad knee condition prevented her from entering the field and the breeder decided it was best for her to became a family pet. Alison's mom found Meeka online and picked her up for Alison while she was in Germany. Alison met Meeka for the first time at the Chicago Airport when she came home that summer. It only took a day and they became fast friends and very attached to each other. Meeka will be 11 years old this August. Meeka has traveled all over and lived with Alison in Germany, Milwaukee, WI, Sacramento, CA and now Pittsburgh. Meeka often comes to the studio with Alison and watches ballet class and rehearsal in her little travel bag. Meeka recently had her professional ballet premiere in Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's The Three Musketeers. Alison calls Meeka her ballet dog - "Mimi".

Abby, a Sheppard-Collie mix, is a failed foster dog attempt – as in, Alison failed to give her back. Abby is very athletic and enjoys long walks with Rhett. She has a lovely long coat, but gets a short summer cut every June. She protests vociferously while they shear her hair, but clearly loves the cooling cut! She was about 2 years old when Alison got her, so she is now around 8 years old. Alison was volunteering as a dog walker at the WPHS and saw her one day as I was walking dogs. Alison took her for a walk and something with Abby really attracted her. Abby caught kennel cough while in the shelter and had to be isolated for a few weeks. When she returned to the adoption floor, she became a super barker and was being overlooked for her new bad kennel manners.  Alison decided to take her in as a foster dog to give her a cage break to see if it might help reduce her anxiety. Well... She never went back to the shelter and within a week Alison adopted her.  Abby still loves to bark, but has gotten better, is a very loving and sweet girl - Alison and Rhett can't imagine her not being a part of their lives.

Tucson | Pittsburgh Dog Photography

A couple of weeks ago I met Karen, Mark, and their lab Tucson who is going to be one of the pets featured in the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society's 2012 Calendar. Tucson has all the lab characteristics - loves to play, swim, sleep and eat - his favorite. Well, actually his favorite is getting treats. Before finding Karen and Mark, Tucson, a yellow lab, was found wandering on the roads of Buffalo Township and was picked up by Animal Control and taken to the Butler Animal Shelter. That was eight years ago. He was fostered for a few weeks until the family found that they were allergic to him; so back to the shelter he went.

The shelter put his photo in the local paper, but no one came for him. He had gone from one family, to the shelter, to a foster family, and then back to the shelter. Karen's son got a call from the foster family about this shy, cute, friendly lab that she had to go see.

Karen and her husband Mark had lost their last German Shepherd nine months ago and were just now ready for a new pet. The first three weeks Tucson would not look them in the eye, but slowly they gained his trust. When he knew he was at their home to stay, he showed them all the tricks he knew.
